Coming off such a stellar start against Grambling, the Cajuns thought they’d have some momentum on their side against Mississippi State. They had a bye week to rest and prepare, but they looked like they had just played a game the night before. It didn’t look good.
The Cajuns just could not get anything going, and they let the Bulldogs coast to an easy win. Bulldog QB Nick Fitzgerald had shaken off the rust from that first game and logged a dominating performance. Louisiana had no answer for the display that he put on. After the Cajuns took an early led, the Bulldogs responded with a touchdown and never looked back.
The game was a step backwards for the Cajuns and a genuine disappointment. Sure, it may have been a long shot that the Cajuns would pull off the upset, but in no way was it completely implausible. A few more things going the right way early on could have kept them in the game. That didn’t happen.
Louisiana will look to get back on track next Saturday against Coastal Carolina. This will open up the Cajuns’ Sun Belt schedule for the season, and a win would be a huge momentum booster. They will absolutely need a victory against the Chanticleers to stay at or above .500 for the next few weeks... especially since they see the Crimson Tide later this season. If winning against Mississippi State was a longshot, then winning against Alabama will require an act of God on the Cajuns’ behalf.
There’s still a lot to look forward to for this year! Billy Napier has a lot of time to establish a solid rhythm for his new team and have a strong showing in Sun Belt play. Their focus can shift towards conference games now.
