As we approach the home stretch before fall practices and essentially just one month before the start of college football there are a few bulletin points regarding Texas State football.

Fun Belt Media Day

This past Monday New Orleans hosted the annual media days for the Sun Belt conference and the various members of the divisions sent representatives of each school to meet with members of the media and discuss the upcoming season and various topics.

Texas State was represented by head coach Everett Withers as well as junior offensive lineman Tryston Mizerak and linebacker Bryan London II. All three gave interviews and insight into the upcoming season as the media day was available live on YouTube.

Mizerak told Texas State radio station KTSW about his upcoming move from the right side of the line to the left side and how offensive line coach Eric Mateos, “Brings a different culture to the locker room." 2016’s Third leading tackler in the nation Bryan London II talked about his jersey number change from #55 to #9, attempting to play faster, and his comfort and ability to shine in the 3-4 defense.

At the presser Coach Withers talked about his five players that made the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

“I think it’s important in the process of the student athlete. It’s important to give back to the community.”

He also brought up the Sun Belt championship game, which will be played starting in 2018, and how it represents growth in the league, how the lack of two-a-days will add five more days of practice, the goals of 2017 for Texas State and how the young team will need its upperclassmen to step up as leaders.

Nowhere To Go But Up

ESPN insider Phil Steele recently made a list of how each school’s pass and rush offense and pass and rush defenses will improve and he has Texas State listed at number three. Considering the Bobcats had the worst rush offense in the nation last year this is an optimistic sign.

With the influx of new players and Texas State taking my advice of chaining the players to buffet tables, SWC Roundup released a breakdown of the ‘Cats weight gains in which we see Texas State try to make up some ground on the undersized issues they had last season.

Welcome To The Fold

Texas State added two more recent recruits in defensive linemen Nathalohn Nanai (Shoemaker H.S., Killeen, TX) and Trevor Lawrence (Whitehouse H.S., Whitehouse, TX), bringing the total of 2018 commitments to 18. This is an effort to rebuild and rebrand the Bobcat program and top last year’s best Sun Belt recruiting class.

Fall practice is right around the corner with the Bobcats starting their camp July 31st and running through August 26th. Full pads will start on August 5th.

Texas State single game tickets were announced to go on sale August 8th which include an early season match up with Sun Belt Powerhouse Appalachian State and the I-35 showdown with rival UTSA.
