Late Wednesday, after being publicly rebuffed by Doug Meacham, Major Applewhite, Houston Nutt and others, Texas State pulled a rabbit out of their hat as Everett Withers was named head football coach.
Withers comes to San Marcos from James Madison, where he compiled a 19-7 record in two seasons, going to the NCAA FCS Playoffs both seasons. This past year, Withers led JMU to a 48-45 FCS-over-FBS victory at SMU.
Withers' other head coaching experience comes in his interim season in charge at North Carolina in 2011, going 7-6.
Having graduated from Sun Belt foe App State in 1985, Withers has been a journeyman assistant coach from 1988 onward, with stops at Austin Peay, Tulane, Southern Miss, Texas and stints in the NFL with New Orleans and Tennessee.
Prior to becoming JMU coach and after his North Carolina interim coach stint, Withers was the defensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer in 2012 and 2013.
Withers' style of play at JMU was a wide-open spread offense which often put up absurd numbers. Going to a talent-rich state like Texas, one would figure Withers would bring that same play style.
Presser to formally introduce Withers will be at 3:00 pm CT Thursday.
