In one of the most dominant all-around wins in recent memory for many ULM fans, the Warhawks blew out Nicholls State, 47-0, to get to 1-1 on the season.
Garrett Smith was almost perfect, completing 79% of his passes for more than 11 yards per attempt. 18 of his 26 completions went to Ajalen Holley (who also scored two touchdowns) and Rashon Ceaser.
The Warhawk defense completely shut down the Colonels offense. Nicholls State mustered just 260 total yards for the game, and much of that came in the second half when the game was well out of reach. Gerrand Johnson forced a fumble and disrupted the Colonels front all night.
Maybe the most encouraging sign from Smith's game was his running ability. He carried the ball five times for 46 yards, including a tough, well-earned 10-yard touchdown run. Kaylon Watson and DeVontae McNeal combined for 45 yards on 13 carries with the first team, but Ben Luckett was impressive in the second half, running for 84 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. We might see some more first-team carries from him in the upcoming weeks.
The Warhawks take next week off before taking on Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 26. Any guesses on the spread?
