David Bailiff and Rice football shocked recruiting pundits today after securing the commitment of Hayden Howerton. A three star offensive tackle from state champion Katy High School, Howerton chose the Owls over 21 other scholarship offers including several Power 5 and Ivy League programs.

At 6'4", 250 pounds, the mobile lineman is regarded as one of the best offensive line prospects in the Houston area.

Howerton mainly lined up as weakside offensive tackle in Katy's smash-mouth offense in his junior season. Howerton used his quickness and wingspan to seal off the edge and take on linebackers at the next level as the Tigers pounded the football to their eight state championship.

While Howerton will need a redshirt year to bulk up, he is an elite prospect at the CUSA level and should start at least three seasons for the Owls.

Rice's 2017 recruiting class now stands at three commitments. All three commitments are from three star athletes within 30 miles of campus.
