The 2023 Frisco Bowl matchup is set.

The UTSA Roadrunners and Marshall Thundering Herd will square off in Frisco, TX — a suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex — on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The 2023 Frisco Bowl marks the fourth meeting between the programs. Marshall claims a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, winning the initial matchup in 2013 as well as the latest one in 2018, while UTSA edged the Thundering Herd in 2017.

UTSA (8-4, 7-1 AAC) overcame a 1-3 start to non-conference play and thoroughly dominated AAC competition to start 7-0 in league play. The Roadrunners fell to Tulane on Black Friday to prevent an AAC Championship Game appearance during their inaugural year in the conference. Jeff Traylor’s squad can conclude their season in spectacular fashion, however, as UTSA has long strived for its first bowl victory. UTSA is 0-4 in bowl games all-time, losing one in each of the last three season. The Roadrunners return to the Frisco Bowl for the second time in the game’s brief history, hoping for a different result after losing 38-24 to San Diego State in 2021.

Marshall (6-6, 3-5 Sun Belt) was one of the 22 unbeaten FBS teams after Week 5, sporting a 4-0 record highlighted by a non-conference win over Virginia Tech. The Thundering Herd stumbled in the middle of the season with a 5-game losing streak but bounced back with two wins in the final three weeks to clinch bowl eligibility. This marks Marshall’s 10th bowl appearance in the last 11 years, and the team fared 6-3 over the previous nine. Marshall defeated UConn 28-14 in the 2022 Myrtle Beach Bowl and seeks its second consecutive bowl win and third-straight winning season under third-year head coach Charles Huff. Marshall is the first Sun Belt team to ever appear in the Frisco Bowl, which launched in 2017.

The 2023 Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl kicks off from Toyota Stadium on Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT. It will be nationally televised on ESPN.
