Just two days after losing out of the FCS playoffs in the quarterfinals to Albany, Idaho’s football program will be saying goodbye two of its signature players. Quarterback Gevani McCoy and running back Anthony Woods have both officially entered their names into the transfer portal as of Monday.
McCoy, a redshirt sophomore, won the 2022 Jerry Rice Award and had a tremendous follow-up season this year. He threw for 2,910 yards and 15 touchdowns while completing 65% of his passes. Woods, also a sophomore, led the Vandals with 1,155 rushing yards and had 16 touchdowns this past year.
On his career as a whole, McCoy threw for over 5,800 yards and put up 43 scores. Woods had 19 TDs and 2,027 yards in that same span.
Both players were instrumental in the team’s recent success over the past two seasons. Idaho reached the postseason both years and went to the quarterfinals this year, a place the program hasn’t been since 1993. The Vandals offense averaged over 32 points per game this fall thanks in large part to Woods and McCoy.
Idaho was also one of only four FCS schools to beat an FBS opponent in 2023, picking up an impressive win over Nevada back in September.
Their other star on offense, receiver Hayden Hatten, just finished up his senior year and will be graduating.
