Around The Dog Park: Five G5 Teams In AP Top 25

NCAA Football: Texas-San Antonio at Tulane Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

As Conference Championship Week begins, we have five G5 teams all included in the most recent AP Poll: Tulane, Liberty, Toledo, James Madison, and SMU.

Tulane are still the G5’s leader for a bid in the New Year’s Six. However, a win by SMU in this week’s AAC Championship game could significantly shake things up.

  • Unfortunately, the biggest headline for SMU heading into the AAC title game will be the injury status of Preston Stone. Stone exited the win over Navy with a leg injury that appeared fairly severe. It’s unknown as of Sunday whether or not he will be ready for that contest.
  • Tyler Grubbs is a name that football fans in the state of Louisiana are pretty familiar with by now. He had another stellar game for Tulane this past weekend defending Frank Harris and company. The Tulane, former LA Tech, linebacker spoke to the media for about nine minutes on Saturday.

  • Dana Dimel produced one winning season in six years at UTEP. Now, he’s out of a job. The Miners have begun a national search for their next head coach.
  • Liberty finished an unbeaten season on Saturday thanks to a running game that put up nearly 450 yards. Why did they lean on the running game so much? Jamie Chadwell explained.

Sun Belt

  • Both Marshall and Southern Miss made notable changes to their coaching staffs on Sunday morning. While it’s not the head coach, it could have a major impact on how they operate moving forward and, for Marshall, in their upcoming bowl game.
  • Perhaps the biggest coaching news in the Sun Belt on Sunday was the news that Terry Bowden will no longer be ULM’s head coach. Bowden had been ULM’s coach since prior to the 2021 season. He was 10-26 with the Warhawks.
