The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers exploded onto the national college football scene in 2020 and were arguably the story of the year in the sport. The Chanticleers piled up win after win, with the season highlighted by an impromptu matchup with BYU on the national stage.
Head coach Jamey Chadwell’s club finished the regular season with an 11-0 record, then fell to Liberty in the FCS Mortgage Cure Bowl by way of a 37-34 overtime shootout.
Heading into the 2021 college football season, the oddsmakers have great expectations for the Chanticleers. The consensus Over/Under win total by the sportsbooks has Coastal Carolina right at 11 games.
Looking over the upcoming schedule, it looks like the wise guys in Vegas know exactly what they’re doing.
There’s only one team on Coastal Carolina’s slate this season projected to win more than 8 games — Appalachian State — who has an Over/Under of 9. Outside of that game, the only other team with an Over/Under of 8 or more is Buffalo, who is right at 8 games. Even with the departure of head coach Lance Leipold to Kansas, this is a Buffalo team that won 10 games a season ago and has a sizeable core of players returning. That’s not exactly a gimme.
On paper, Coastal Carolina should be favored in all 12 games on their regular-season schedule. That said, both the Buffalo and Appalachian State games are on the road.
And that’s “how they get ya.”
Placing a bet on the Coastal Carolina Over/Under comes down to whether or not you think they have a great shot at beating both Buffalo and Appalachian State while avoiding an upset somewhere else, or thinking there’s no way they repeat last season’s success and end up stumbling twice.
That’s gambling, folks. Where are you putting your money?
