Quarterback Kyle Lowe committed to Middle Tennessee early Wednesday afternoon. Lowe is a three-star rising senior from Memphis, TN. He plays at Fayette-Ware High School for his head coach and father Woodrow Ware Jr.

Before settling on the Blue Raiders, Lowe had received offers from Navy, Miami University, and Louisiana, among others. All three were among the schools listed in Lowe’s top eight, which he tweeted in early May.

Lowe is a former running back; he transitioned to quarterback his freshman year.

“It helps a lot,” Lowe said of history as a running back, “I don’t have to think too much when I’m running, so I’m able to make moves and make people miss and add that other threat to my game.”

His mobility is expected from a quarterback of his size; per 247 Sports, Lowe is just 5’11” and 170 pounds.

Not as expected is Lowe’s arm strength. His Hudl highlights and clips from personal workouts show strong (but not perfect) mechanics that allow him to out-throw his size.

Lowe’s mechanics do raise questions. His hips are often caught behind the target as opposed to perpendicular and he holds the ball lower than what is ideal. Some development will be needed before he makes it to campus.

By the time Lowe gets to Murfreesboro, there will be a job opening at quarterback. The Blue Raiders had Asher O’Hara, C-USA’s leading passer, in 2020 but he has since transferred to Sacramento State of the FCS’s Big Sky Conference.

Bailey Hockman is the presumed replacement in 2021, but as a redshirt senior his time is limited. Hockman transferred to MTSU from NC State in January.

Lowe is just the third to commit to MTSU from the class of 2022 alongside fellow three-stars Jaylen Ward and Devin Riles.

Lowe comes from a potentially historic football family. His grandfather is Woodrow Lowe Sr: a collegiate Hall of Famer. Lowe Sr. played linebacker for Bear Bryant’s Alabama Crimson Tide in the 1970s and was one of five linebackers named to the Los Angeles Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team.

Lowe Sr. is the namesake of Lowe’s brother, Woodrow Lowe III, but he goes by Trey. Trey Lowe is the starting quarterback at Southern Mississippi and holds multiple passing records at Bolivar High; Lowe Jr. previously coached at Bolivar and Kyle Lowe played his freshman season there.

Kyle Lowe begins his senior year for Fayette-Ware against Chester County High School on August 20th.
