We’re here to talk through what’s going on in the third week of the Conference USA season. Last week was our first week making picks for this season and it went fine as I went 4-1. While there are a few head scratchers on the slate this week, I think I can get out of this week with another winning record.
Let’s keep running through the season!
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs Liberty Flames - Noon ET
Western couldn’t get it done in week one against Louisville, but had some solid moments with Tyrell Pigrome at QB. This week against a lesser opponent that hasn’t played a game yet, the Tops should notch their first win.
Marshall Thundering Herd vs #23 Appalachian State Mountaineers - 3:30 ET
App State are one of the toughest G5 teams in the NCAA currently. While Grant Wells showed that he has the the Herd on the right track, the Mountaineers should have this one in the bag.
UTSA Roadrunners vs Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks - 3:30 ET
UTSA showed that there’s a spark in them to start this season with an opening win against Texas State last weekend. If they can keep that up, there shouldn’t be a problem for the Roadrunners to beat Texas State.
Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders vs Troy Trojans - 3:30 ET
Troy have a very high powered offense and showed that continuously throughout last season. MTSU have a ton of potential, but keep running into situations where they are unable to show it. Troy seem more ready for a win right now.
North Texas Mean Green vs Southern Methodist Mustangs - 6 PM ET
Shane Buechele leads a very high powered offense against UNT in this one. For the Mean Green, they haven’t quite figured it out at QB1 yet. I feel pretty confident in picking SMU here.
Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs Louisiana Tech Bulldogs - 7:30 PM ET
Southern Miss have the benefit of having played a game already. Louisiana Tech had their opener against Baylor cancelled due to positive COVID-19 tests. That extra week of competition should make a big difference, so I’m picking Southern Miss.
UTEP Miners vs Abilene Christian Wildcats - 9 PM ET
UTEP has a significantly easier fight ahead of them this week than the battle that they had last week against Texas. Abilene Christian are not the toughest opponent within the FCS, but UTEP have had a knack for getting into trouble against FCS teams. Nevertheless, the Miners are the pick.
