While Willie Taggart hasn’t coached a game for Florida Atlantic, he’s already paying immediate dividends for the Owls.
Class of 2021 quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Fame NFL cornerback Deion Sanders gave his verbal commitment to Florida Atlantic on Monday evening.

The four-star recruit chose FAU over offers from multiple Power Five programs and Group of Five powerhouse UCF.
Should Sanders indeed sign with the Owls, he would become the highest-rated quarterback prospect to sign with a Conference USA program since Anthony Alford signed with Southern Miss in 2012.
The younger Sanders has thrown for over 8,900 yards and 123 touchdowns in just three years of high school football.
Despite his father being well-known for his athleticism, Sanders is listed as a pro-style quarterback, garnering the distinction of ranking 14th in the nation among pro-style QBs by 247 Sports.

Sanders’ primary recruiter to FAU is listed as Clint Trickett, but the relationship stretches back to Taggart’s time with Florida State, the alma mater of Sanders’ father.
The Owls are in excellent shape at the quarterback position with current signal-caller Chris Robison still having two years of eligibility left and coming off a 2019 season that saw him throw for 3,701 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Sanders would join the sons of Hall of Famers Terrell Owens, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin whose sons Terique, Warren II and Michael II are currently on the Owls’ roster.
