The Green Wave football program’s social media outlets just wrapped up an interactive “contest” that asked fans to vote on their favorite uniform that the team wore last season. Yes, as of late, Tulane has put together a thorough enough wardrobe to actually run one of these contests.
The days of simply playing with basic home and away kits are done; the Wave is now mixing it up a lot more than it used to. By no means are we dealing with an Oregon level of uniform options here, but Tulane’s 2019 team put together a respectable lineup of jerseys, helmets and decals. In fact, the team wore 10 different combinations in 2019. Here’s how we rank them...
10. White head-to-toe

The Green Wave only donned this bad boy once last season. The use of the fan-favorite “angry wave” was perhaps the only redeeming quality about this combo as it saw no other real application of the school’s colors. Yes, there was minimal striping down the pant legs and shoulders but the all-white pants, jersey and helmet certainly left something to be desired.
9. White Helmet / Sky Blue Jersey and Pants

One thing Tulane has done as of late to shake things up with their look as been an implementation of the sky blue color. This has manifested itself in the team wearing blue from time to time instead of green. This particular combination featuring the blue jersey and pants coupled with the white “angry wave” helmet came to light one time last season and it happened to be in the Wave’s bowl matchup with Southern Miss. While many seem to enjoy the heavy use of sky blue, we felt that that the white helmet set this one off just a smidge.
8. Olive Green head-to-toe

Another kit the team only busted out once last season was the all-green home makeup. In what is essentially the inverse of our #10 uniform, Tulane’s use of the green pants, jersey and “angry wave” helmet ranks slightly better than the road white for the mere fact that it looks a tad sharper. Plus, the shine on those green helmets is quite easy on the eyes. It was apparent that this combo didn’t rank highly in the minds of Tulane’s equipment staff either, though, as the team only wore them for a less-than-enticing matchup with an FCS opponent.
7. Olive Green Jersey / White Pants and Helmet

This combo has been a mainstay for the Wave over the last couple seasons as the team brings it out a few times a year. This last season was no different. The Greenies used this uniform three times at home (one being in the season opener). The white helmet and pants gives a nice contrast to the green jersey. Again, the “angry wave” makes its appearance. There’s a certain level of “plain-ness” to this one, though, that prevents us from ranking it any higher.
6. Olive Green Helmet / White Jersey / Black Pants

If I’m being honest, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this combination. I can, with certainty, say its better than some and worse than others so #6 feels right. Tulane has taken to using black in their kits over the last couple years but using it on just the pants with a white jersey and green helmet? There’s a little too much clashing here. Make those pants green (which the team did) and then you’ve got a slick uniform.
5. Sky Blue Jersey / White Pants and Helmet

When Tulane used the sky blue with more moderation it looked better. Unfortunately they only brought out this one once last season and did so on the road. The white pants and helmet go nicely with the light blue jerseys and no one facet of the look overpowers another. The only thing that feels to be lacking from this combination is a bit more green. But hey, the “angry wave” makes everything better, right?
4. Sky Blue head-to-toe

Okay, I know I just said it looked better when the Wave used the sky blue a lot more conservatively but if there’s one exception then this is it. The Wave unveiled these bad boys right before a huge primetime battle with Houston that was aired on ESPN. The pants and jersey is a lot of blue, yes, but the real kicker that tied it all together? Those helmets. The “TU” lettering with the chrome green and white atop the blue helmet... it’s gorgeous. It’s no surprise that this one quickly became a favorite among Tulane players and fans alike. Plus, these uniforms must’ve had some luck because we all know how that game with the Cougars ended.
3. Olive Green Helmet / Black Pants and Jersey

There’s always been something about transforming a uniform all-black that makes it so cool. When the Wave wore these last year against UCF it was no different. The black jersey and pants coupled with the green helmets made for a combo that was nothing short of eye candy. It takes a special shade of green to work well with black and it seems as though Tulane has found it.
2. White Jersey / Sky Blue Pants and Helmet

Some of the cleanest uniforms the team put together in 2019 was the road ones they wore to West Point. Right after Tulane blessed us all with the new helmets against Houston, they brought them out one more time for their ensuing game against Army. They paired it up with a white jersey and sky blue pants making a striking combo that looked beautiful on the green field. This Week 6 gem has to be near the top of the list and seeing as the Greenies won this game too, you can’t argue those helmets are made of something special. We hope to see more of them in the seasons to come.

The pièce de résistance to the Green Wave’s 2019 wardrobe has to be these. The green helmet and pants pairs perfectly with the white road jerseys. The sky blue stripe that runs down the pant legs and shoulders makes sure that all school colors are represented in a way that compliments the overall look. The “angry wave” ties this whole outfit together but you’ve got to believe this uniform wouldn’t be nearly as sharp if those helmets didn’t have a shiny matte finish. The Wave only wore these twice last season but maybe that means we’ll be getting more of them in 2020.
