The latest COVID-19 cancellation in college football is a frustrating one for #FunBelt fans. The Sun Belt Conference announced late Thursday evening that the championship game between the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Ragin’ Cajuns scheduled for Saturday would be cancelled. No plans to reschedule the game have been announced as of Friday afternoon.

Needless to say, Billy Napier is not happy...

Per the AP, an entire position group would have been unavailable due to a positive COVID-19 test and subsequent contact tracing concerns within the Coastal Carolina program.

The good news for Coastal Carolina is that they will still be eligible for the New Year’s Six even with the cancellation of the championship game. They just need to be the highest ranked G5 team when the regular season officially concludes.

As a result of the cancellation, both programs have been declared this season’s Sun Belt Conference Co-Champions, per commissioner Keith Gill.

Here’s what each school’s AD had to say.

“We are severely disappointed for our student-athletes and staff to not have the opportunity to play in what would have been a truly exciting championship game for the Sun Belt Conference,” ULL AD Bryan Maggard said. “For our football program, fans and alumni, we look forward to learning of our bowl destination this weekend.”

“We are all obviously devastated with this development and hurt for the student-athletes from both institutions in that they will not have a chance to compete for a conference title,” Coastal Carolina athletic director Matt Hogue said. “However, the adherence to health and safety protocols for our student-athletes has been and remains the first priority. Those protocols and guidance from our medical team fully governs this decision.”

Well, as you all take in the championship games that do manage to get played this weekend, pour some out for what probably would have been an immensely entertaining matchup.
