The Cajuns and Chanticleers were set for a primetime ESPN battle Wednesday night and it was exactly that. Trading touchdown after touchdown down the stretch of the game, Coastal was able to get the last laugh with a 40-yard Massimo Biscardi field goal with four seconds left to give Coastal Carolina their first win against an FBS Top 25 program in school history.
Louisiana was plagued by their own mistakes, losing the turnover battle and getting called for six penalties for a total of 50 yards. Another major issue that the Cajuns had were dropped passes. In my opinion, the turning point of the ballgame was when Elijah Mitchell dropped a backfield dump pass on 3rd down with 5:40 left in the ball game. Levi Lewis was also very subpar, going 14/24 for 173 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also added 84 rushing yards on six carries, including a long 51-yard run early in the fourth. Defensively, the Cajuns gave up 414 yards of total offense Wedneday night, their 3rd game this season giving up 400 or more yards. Tackling was an issue for Louisiana, playing the arm tackling game rather than wrapping up. Louisiana (3-1, 2-1 SBC) will now prepare to travel to Birmingham, AL to play UAB Friday night.
For the Chanticleers, Greyson McCall was electric, going 17/24 for 202 yards and a score, while rushing for 45 yards and a score on 11 carries. The freshman continued his storybook debut season Wednesday night for the revamped Coastal offense. CJ Marable was their leading rusher with 73 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Jaivon Heiligh was the leader in receiving for Coastal, pulling in 8 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown.
This game was about as evenly matched as they come, and it truly showed on the field. Sun Belt football in 2020 has been extraordinary to watch and it looks poised to get even better going down the stretch into November and December.
