P6 Pick’em: Houston looks to restore NRG magic

The Coogs pulled off a huge upset in NRG Stadium back in 2016, and they look to do it again Friday.

It was a tough week for everyone in Week 2. No one hit on their upset or blowout picks, but everyone got their Lock and Use ‘Em and Lose ‘Em. As we inch closer to conference play, it becomes more difficult to pick winners. Last week was a tough one for the conference as they went 0-4 against Power 5 competition. Week 3 is a perfect time to bounce back, and it all starts on Friday. Houston hosts Washington State at NRG Stadium Friday night, and the Coogs are looking to pull off another huge upset. Last time they played here, they upset third ranked Oklahoma to start 2016. This win might be an even bigger upset given the uncertainty surrounding Houston’s program currently. Expect some points to be scored in that one.

Lock (1 point): You pick anyone you want (within the AAC games). Even if it’s a non-conference game, you can pick the opposing team. This is a pick you’re extremely confident in, and likely won’t lose.

Blowout (2 points): This is just AAC teams. You will pick which AAC team will win by the most points. It’ll most likely be a blowout, but even if that team only wins by 10, it counts in this category.

Upset (3 points): We’re counting this as any team that’s not favored. It could be their +1 or +35, doesn’t matter. You’re picking a team that’s not the favorite to win that particular game, not cover the spread.

Use ‘Em and Lose ‘Em (4 points): There are 12 teams in the AAC. You get to pick one team per week, and then you cannot pick them again. So, if you pick UCF, you lose them. Your list of teams to pick from will obviously decrease as the season progresses.

**NOTE: ALL GAMES PICKED ARE AAC GAMES ONLY

FOR OUR FANS/READERS: All of your picks are decided by a vote. The option in each category with the most votes will be your selection each week.

Lock

Mike: Memphis has been good to me all season and I like what South Alabama is building but give me the Tigers and lock it up.

Joe B: Tulane needs a bounce back game after struggling against Auburn. Playing Missouri State helps them get back on track.

Joe S: SMU has started the season with two impressive wins and keeps it going this week.

Eric: Tulane is my lock for a win. The trip to Auburn was a little more then they could handle, but I think this team is legit, especially after seeing them destroy FIU first-hand.

Blowout

Mike: I’m high on this Tulane team and they get an FCS bounce back game at the right time. Give me the Green Wave.

Joe B: SMU is my blowout pick. Somehow, SMU’s only favored by 17, but I think the final score will show a much larger margin of victory.

Joe S: Tulane wants to get back on track this week after scoring only six points against Auburn. They get a FCS opponent at the right time.

Eric: A team that’s really surprised me is SMU. It looks like they’re ready to turn the corner a compete, especially with that win over North Texas last week. I think the Mustangs provide the biggest blowout.

Upset

Mike: Cincinnati has an intriguing let down game against Miami (OH) but I’m not brave enough to pick it. Give me ECU over a Navy team I think is going in the wrong direction.

Joe B: ECU. I’m buying in on Mike Houston and the Pirates, and praying their stock continues to rise.

Joe S: Temple makes the most sense. They convincingly defeated Maryland at College Park last season, and will slow down the Terps offense just enough to win this one as well.

Eric: I’m going bold and taking Temple. Was torn between that game and Washington State vs Houston, but I think the Coogs’ defense might give up a few points.

Use ‘Em and Lose ‘Em

Mike: Okay Bulls... you can do this. FCS opponent at home. Get Charlie a win for the love of all that is good. Please. Give me USF.

Joe B: If anyone needs a win, it’s Charlie Strong’s team. USF is my pick here, but a loss against South Carolina State would produce major problems.

Joe S: USF has been dreadful the first two weeks against P5 opponents. Fortunately, they get a FCS team this week to regroup.

Eric: I think it’s time to break glass in case of emergency and choose UCF as my team here. Plus, I’ll be at the game, so why not.
