Quick look back at the best G5 programs against the spread during the 2018 season.

We are only a few weeks from the start of the college football season but before we move ahead to this season, let’s take a final look back at last year and which programs were the best against the spread in Vegas. I’m new to the Underdog Dynasty team, and I can’t wait to contribute to the squad in a sports betting capacity. Below you will find the best teams ATS in the AAC, C-USA and the Sun Belt.

2018 American Athletic Conference ATS Final Standings

1. UCF - 9-4

2. Temple - 8-5

3. Memphis - 8-6

4. Cincinnati - 7-6

Interesting ATS Trends

  • Top four teams ATS all made a bowl game last season (UCF, Temple, Memphis, Cincinnati)
  • UCF finished in the top 10 ATS in the country covering 69.2% of their games
  • USF went 4-9 ATS and still made a bowl game
  • Memphis finished with a 6-1 home record ATS
  • Temple led the conference with a 5-1 away ATS record and went 3-1 ATS as an underdog
  • UCF finished with a 9-3 record ATS as a favorite

1. FIU - 10-3

2. UAB - 10-4

3. Charlotte - 7-5

4. Middle Tennessee - 8-6

Interesting ATS Trends

  • Three of the top four teams ATS made a bowl game last season (FIU, UAB, Middle Tennessee)
  • FIU tied for second in the country ATS covering 76.9% of their games
  • UAB tied for fourth in the country ATS covering 71.4% of their games
  • Marshall made a bowl game, but struggled ATS finishing 5-8
  • North Texas also made a bowl game, but finished just 4-9 ATS
  • UAB finished with a 5-1 home record ATS
  • FIU had a perfect 5-0 record ATS on the road and went 4-0 ATS as an underdog
  • UAB finished with a 7-3 record ATS as a favorite

2018 Sun Belt ATS Final Standings

1. Troy - 9-3-1

2. Georgia Southern - 9-4

3. Appalachian State - 9-4

4. Louisiana - 9-5

Interesting ATS Trends

  • Top four teams ATS all made a bowl game last season (Troy, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Louisiana)
  • Troy, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State all finished within the top 10 in the country ATS
  • Texas State had an overall record of 3-9, but finished up 6-5-1 ATS.
  • Georgia Southern went 5-1 ATS at home
  • Troy and Appalachian State both went 5-1 ATS on the road and Texas State finished an impressive 4-1-1 ATS on the road

Breaking Down The Numbers

Eleven out of the 12 top teams ATS in the AAC, C-USA and the Sun Belt all made bowl games and they had a combined ATS record of 96-50-1. These teams weren’t only winning games - they were rolling through their specific conferences against the spread. Seven total teams finished within the top 20 teams in the country ATS.
