Another week, another NM State position preview! This time we’ll look at one of the deeper units on the offensive side of the ball, running back.
Returning: Jason Huntley, Christian Gibson
Departing: Royce Caldwell
Incoming: Naveon Mitchell, Josh Foley, Juwaun Price
Despite having to replace the legendary Larry Rose last year, New Mexico State’s run game was fairly similar, dropping only slightly from 108 yards per game to 105.
That can be attributed to the talent the Aggies have in the backfield.
Seniors Jason Huntley and Christian Gibson are both solid backs who are more than able to run for 100 or more yards a game.
Huntley is also especially dangerous in the return game (three kickoff return touchdowns) and in the receiving game. The fact that Huntley is so versatile made Gibson’s emergence last season all the more meaningful, as the duo can now provide a nice one-two punch and spread the defense out.
Rounding out the unit is redshirt freshman Naveon Mitchell and Josh Foley. Mitchell is a three star recruit and got a year to get bigger and stronger and should definitely see some touches this year.
I look forward to seeing the production of this unit this season!
