Choosing C-USA: Week 7

We might have a couple surprises this week in Conference USA.

NCAA Football: Texas-San Antonio at Southern Mississippi Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Time for another edition of Choosing C-USA. There are some key divisional games this week and it’s sure to be some entertaining football. Overall, I’ve picked about 80% of the games right and if I can keep that pace up for the rest of the year, I’ll be happy.

Let’s do the thing.

Last week: 4-1

Season total: 49-11

Marshall Thundering Herd vs Old Dominion Monarchs - 2:30 PM ET

Marshall wins this one. Isaiah Green and the offense still has some maturing to do. That being said, the defense should have a field day against Old Dominion’s consistently poor pass blocking and seeming lack of a run game.

Florida Atlantic Owls vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders - 4 PM ET

FAU takes the victory. In an important matchup in the East, it will likely come down to which defense has a more impressive day in a battle between two of the league’s better quarterbacks. Right now, FAU seem up to the challenge, but MTSU will put up a good fight.

UTSA Roadrunners vs UAB Blazers - 6 PM ET

UAB is a fairly easy choice. UTSA’s running game got going last week, but it will be a significantly tougher task against the Blazers. On the offensive side for the Blazers’, Tyler Johnston showed he has a few things to work on last week, but if he has an ‘on’ day it will be a blowout.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs Army Black Knights - 7 PM ET

I like the Hilltoppers for the upset in this one. Army don’t have momentum on their side after a home loss to Tulane last week. WKU also are defending the run very well right now with just 109.8 yards allowed on the ground per game. Army have shown that they have some issues dealing with the pass, so Ty Storey needs to have another solid day.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs UMass Minutemen - 7 PM ET

This one isn’t rocket surgery. UMass clearly doesn’t have much in the tank this season. Tech aren’t playing perfect football, but they are riding a four game win streak behind some pretty exceptional play from J’Mar Smith and Justin Robertson on offense and Amik Robertson on defense. Pick the Bulldogs.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs North Texas Mean Green - 7 PM ET

It’s hard to argue with the success Southern Miss has on offense with Jack Abraham and Quez Watkins at their best. North Texas, meanwhile, continue to be underwhelming up to this point in the year. If you had told me over the summer that I’d be making this pick, I would have laughed, but I’m taking Southern Miss.

FIU Panthers vs Charlotte 49ers - 7 PM ET

This one is tough. On the one hand, you have the #1 scoring offense in the league at Charlotte. On the other, you have an FIU team that despite some stumbles have the second best scoring defense in the league, a finally healthy James Morgan, and a good amount of confidence after a win against UMass. Our gut says FIU.
