Another week of college football is in the books, but there was not much change in our latest Underdog Top 10.
The Boise State Broncos remain our runaway leader at No. 1 in our G5 rankings, garnering every first place vote except for one. The Broncos are coming off a bye week and are the highest ranked G5 team in the national polls.
The UCF Knights are at No. 2, picking up the one first-place vote needed for Boise State to be a unanimous No. 1. Not surprisingly, the lone person not to pick Boise State at the top spot was our UCF representative in our panel of voters.
The rest of the rankings are similar to last week, with much of the teams remaining the same, but a few changes in their ranking. Below are the final results from our panel of voters.
Underdog Top 10 - Week 5
Rank (LW) | Team | Points | Conference |
---|---|---|---|
Rank (LW) | Team | Points | Conference |
1 (1) | Boise State | 119 (11) | Mountain West |
2 (2) | UCF | 104 (1) | American |
3 (4) | SMU | 87 | American |
4 (3) | Memphis | 84 | American |
5 (6) | Appalachian State | 60 | Sun Belt |
6 (7) | Tulane | 50 | American |
7 (5) | Utah State | 40 | Mountain West |
8 (8) | Army | 36 | Independent |
9 (9) | Hawaii | 34 | Mountain West |
10 (NR) | Cincinnati | 31 | American |
*Numbers in parentheses are the number of first place votes*
Biggest jump: Cincinnati Bearcats
Largest fall: Utah State Aggies
Memphis has been ranked third all season long, but have been bumped from that spot after SMU received three more votes than the Tigers this week. The Mustangs are ranked nationally for the first time since receiving the death penalty, and that apparently has influenced our voters. In my opinion, SMU deserves to be ahead of Memphis as their schedule has been more difficult so far.
Utah State falling two spots was a bit of a surprise considering they picked up another victory. They can make some major waves in these rankings and the national polls if they can find a way to knock of LSU in Death Valley this week.
Marshall was the tenth team in our rankings last week, but they have been replaced by the Cincinnati team that obliterated them, 52-14, at home this week. The Bearcats are the only new team in our rankings.
Most of the voters agreed on this top 10 as only 15 votes were received on four teams outside the rankings. Boise State, UCF and Memphis have been on every voter’s ballot this season, but for the first time this season we have another team that made everyone’s list and that is App State. The Mountaineers look poised to run away with the Sun Belt this season.
Speaking of the conferences, it‘s still mostly a two-conference race as the American Athletic and Mountain West Conferences own eight of the 10 spots. App State makes the list and Louisiana also received a vote for the Sun Belt. Toledo received the only two votes for any team in the Mid-American, while there were zero for teams in Conference USA.
There is guaranteed to be a shake up in these rankings as four teams in our top 10 will square off this week. UCF travels to Cincinnati in a game that could decide the AAC East, while Tulane and Army will see which team has the better option offense.
