After falling short of a massive week 1 upset, App heads down I-77 for an in-state battle with the 49ers. App nation will be coming out in full force for this matchup, hence why UNCC is adding 2,100 seats to their stadium for the game. Charlotte is coming off a win over FCS Fordham in week 1.
Freshman QB Chris Reynolds saw the nod for the 49ers a week ago and went 13/20 for 267 yards and a score. An intriguing stat to look at is that he was sacked three times in the game. Appalachian’s defense could be the unit to watch in this game as they showed some good signs against Penn State holding their ground on more than one occasion. Freshman LB Jordan Fehr turned in a great performance in Happy Valley along with LB mainstay Anthony Flory.
As to be expected, all eyes will be on Zac Thomas and the offense going into Saturday evening. After answering a lot of questions in week 1 the unit could grind out some serious stats against a Charlotte secondary that was shredded in 2017. Corey Sutton is going to be my offensive player to watch as he led App State in receiving yards a week ago and could really have himself a day in the “Queen City.”
This matchup takes on more than just your regular non-conference game. It’s a battle of two G5 schools still relatively new to the FBS ranks. This is also a big game as it pertains to recruiting in North Carolina and around the Charlotte Metro area. App nation will be out in full force but I expect the 49ers to be just as amped, as this will be the biggest home game of the season for the 49ers.
With that said, App takes care of business and covers the spread as they prove last week was no fluke.
