Tulsa survives, defeating Central Arkansas 38-27

The Golden Hurricane overcomes a fourth quarter deficit to put away an FCS foe.

Tulsa was trailing in the fourth quarter 27-24, a devastating turnover and scoop-and-score touchdown for Central Arkansas had ripped the momentum away from the home team.

Luke Skipper had been smart and efficient with the ball in his hands up until the strip sack. It was an all too familiar scenario for the Golden Hurricane reflecting back to last year, down late in a game they should have been controlling from the start. Skipper and Shamari Brooks bounced back to lead the offense on a gritty 7 play, 75-yard drive for a touchdown to reclaim the lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, TK Wilkerson recovered the fumbled catch by the Bears return man and Brooks plunged into the end zone two plays later to seal the victory. The 2017 Golden Hurricane team would have bowed out after falling behind 27-24. But the offense rose to the occasion and closed the door on any upset hopes Central Arkansas may have had.

In terms of actual play, this team has a lot of mistakes to can clean up from this performance but to come away with a victory and know what you can improve on is the perfect situation for this team. Tulsa visits what should be a riled up Texas Longhorns team next Saturday at 7pm CT.

Standout Stats

  • Tulsa finished 12/20 on third downs and the defense did not allow a third down conversion (0/10)
  • 9 penalties for 92 yards is not going to cut it when AAC league play starts
  • 297 rush yards to Central Arkansas’ 82 was an impressive effort by both lines
  • 8.2 YPA and 2 touchdowns will do just fine for Skipper moving forward
