FCS Betting at the NFL Draft

Online sportsbook BetDSI is offering props for FCS players for the first time

They say you can bet on anything these days. Well, that certainly seems to be the case with the NFL Draft. BetDSI is offering a host of betting options for the 2018 NFL Draft and is the first sportsbook to ever offer odds on non-FBS players. Among the offerings are bets on how many players from non-FBS schools will be drafted and over/unders on the number of players drafted from powerhouse schools like North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Jacksonville State.

Total players from non-FBS teams selected in NFL Draft - Over/Under 22.5

Assuming my math is right, this number seems accurate. Looking back at the last five NFL Draft’s, there were 27 non-FBS players selected in 2013, 22 in 2014, 19 in 2015, 22 in 2016, and 21 in 2017. That puts the average right at 22.6 even though the last four drafts all would have seen the under hit.

Even though seven-round mock drafts are typically futile, R.J. White at CBS Sports had 20 non-FBS players taken in his most recent mock draft and Eddie Brown’s seven-round mock also had 20 non-FBS players on it. That might make the under a good bet if you’re so inclined, but I’m a little biased and I think we will see 23 or 24 go.

Total North Dakota State players selected - Over/Under 1

The best chance for the Bison here is Nick DeLuca. DeLuca was one of the best linebackers in the FCS, but his game may not transfer over to the NFL. He didn’t put up the best numbers at the NFL Combine and there’s a decent chance he goes undrafted. I haven’t seen another mock draft list an NDSU player as a possible draft pick, so the under looks like a good play here.

Total South Dakota State players selected - Over/Under 1.5

This one comes down to whether or not Jake Wieneke is selected. There is no doubt that Dallas Goedert is going to be one of the first FCS players off the board, but Wieneke is a bit of a toss-up. From what I’ve noticed, about half of the mock drafts think he will be a sixth- or seventh-round selection, while the other half believe he will be undrafted. It’s tough to pick a side on this prop.

Total Jacksonville State players selected - Over/Under 1.5

Of these four props, this is by far my favorite. The Gamecocks could have as many as three players selected at the NFL Draft. It’s very likely that Darius Jackson and Siran Neal are selected, and I believe that Roc Thomas will be taken late as well. It’s not often that you see an FCS school have three players get taken in the draft, but the Gamecocks have a very good chance to. The over is a very good bet here.
