App State slugs to a 27-17 victory over Louisiana

The offense was slow but the defense bent and never broke. Fortunately that was enough for App against the Cajuns.

Appalachian State took another step towards a Sun Belt title game appearance come December with their 27-17 win over the Rajun Cajuns on Saturday afternoon.

UL was in this game from start to finish as the Cajuns answered every punch App Sate threw their way especially in the 1st half. Darrynton Evans emerged as the lead back for the injured Jalin Moore and busted out for 183 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. Zac Thomas went 10/20 passing for 106 yards with a TD and an INT.

Andre Nunez went 14/23 passing for 108 yards. Levi Lewis also saw action going 3/4 passing for 80 yards and a TD. Trey Ragas led the way running for the Cajuns with 81 yards and a score on 18 totes.

Late in the game Appalachian gave up their first 2nd half TD since the Penn State game when Ragas took one in from 27 yards out to cut it to 27-17. UL made things interesting when the ensuing onside kick would be muffed by Thomas Hennigan, giving the Cajuns the football back but the App State defense held strong to close out the game.

App State did enough offensively to get the job done but the defense really continued to show its muscle. With the win, App State advances its record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Sun Belt play. UL falls to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in Sun Belt play.

Appalachian State now moves its focus to arch rival Georgia Southern in a huge east division primetime matchup Thursday night on ESPNU. The Cajuns now get a chance to regain ground in the west division as they battle Arkansas State next Saturday night.
