The time has come and passed for ECU to move on from the Scottie Montgomery era

'East Carolina' and 'poor football' are two terms that should never be synonymous.

Throughout the history ECU's football program, any halfway decent coach has been able to win in Greenville. Sonny Randle, Pat Dye, Bill Lewis, Steve Logan, Skip Holtz, Ruffin McNeill. All these coaches were able to field winning teams and a successful program during their respective times in Greenville, even when a few of them (Randle, Lewis) weren't able to later repeat that success at schools in more prominent conferences and with greater resources. The incredible fan support and solid recruiting base in which ECU sits have been able to provide the backbone for coaches to find success with the Pirates.

Yet here we are, in 2018, and poor football is exactly what has become synonymous with East Carolina under the current coaching regime. But the largest condemnation of the current state of the football program in Greenville is not even the complete lack of (and continual dwindling of) fan support, it's the visible disinterest of the fans in the program. Attendance has declined and fans have, sadly, stopped even caring. Losses have become not only tolerable, but expected. And that is what is truly unacceptable.

For these reasons alone, not even to mention the 8-22 results on the field, it's time for East Carolina University and their football program to move on from the Scottie Montgomery era.

The current state of the program can't be discussed without mentioning the main players who set in motion the chain of events that has led us here: Chancellor Cecil Staton, former Athletics Director Jeff Compher, and the ECU Board of Trustees. But regardless of the past decisions that paved the road to this current situation, the road to recovery for the program can't start until Montgomery is gone. Prolonging his tenure in Greenville will only continue to set the program back.

It doesn't take much for even a decent coach to win in Greenville. Just think about what kind of coach it takes to plummet the program to these depths...
