Comparing the perfect seasons of Boise St, TCU, UCF and Utah

The Group of 5 wants respect from the CFB Playoff Committee and the rest of the mainstream college football media. With how UCF was treated after their perfect season, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse for G5 hopefuls.

Since 2000, there have been six undefeated G5 times. In the table below, you can see how each team compares to each other. Every team, besides UCF this season, was at least in the AP top-8 going into their bowl game. Even Utah in 2004, who hadn’t beaten a single team with 10 wins, was ranked higher than UCF this year.

I know what you’re argument is going to be. “None of these schools claimed a National Championship after going undefeated.” My response is that you’re 100% correct. Here’s what makes the UCF situation much different than most of those seasons. Every other season this happened, except for 2008, there was an undefeated Power 5 team in the mix.

In 2008, Utah finished #2 in the AP Poll behind the National Champion Florida gators who were 13-1. In my opinion, Utah should have been playing UF for the title that year or claimed their share like UCF did this year.

If TCU can go undefeated in 2010 and be ranked #2 behind 14-0 Auburn, what’s stopping the AP Poll from ranking undefeated UCF ahead of a one loss team? The new playoff system has a given G5 teams a clear disadvantage compared to the old system. I’m looking to the AP or Coaches Poll voters to make this situation right. Rank UCF #1 in the final poll giving them a share of the national title.
