The first week of the college football season was one of the whackiest yet. Several big-time programs not only failed to cover the spread, but also fell victim to the underdogs. We at Underdog Dynasty absolutely love it.
Two of the unlikeliest upsets took place this past week when the Liberty Flames knocked off Baylor and Howard got the win over UNLV despite being a 45.5-point underdog. For Howard, it was the biggest point spread upset in the history of the college football.
Could we see the same this week? It's possible. But one would think that the FBS programs are on high alert and no one will take their opposition lightly after last week. Then again, we do not need upsets to make a little bit of money. We just need these teams to cover the spread.
After taking last week off due to a destination wedding, I am back to offer some more winners. I split the four games on Week 0/.5, with USF missing the cover by one point and Rice standing no chance against Stanford. It's time to make up for it this week, and a couple of those teams that were upset last week could be in for another loss.
Season record: 2-2
*All lines courtesy of Bovada and are accurate as of this posting
East Carolina Pirates at West Virginia Mountaineers (-24.5): The line originally opened at 19.5 and has jumped up since, but honestly, it could be 31 and I would still be all over WVU. The Pirates were just embarrassed by JMU by 20 points and that was with a late touchdown. West Virginia had a chance to win against Virginia Tech, but couldn't come up with the plays they needed on their final drive. Expect Will Grier to be out for blood in this one and the Mountaineers winning this one by 40-plus points.
UNLV Rebels at Idaho Vandals (-6.5): The "pros" are supposedly hammering the Rebels which has caused this line to drop from 9 to 6.5. Some feel that UNLV will bounce back strong after the embarrassing defeat last week and make this a competitive game. Well, they can fall for that trap. The Vandals have their own motivation this season so take the favorite at home.
Old Dominion Monarchs (-3.5) vs. Massachusetts Minutemen: I am usually not a fan of taking small road favorites when it is a out-of-conference game, but ODU handedly defeated UMass last season and I fully expect them to do the same this week. I don’t have any crazy stats to back this up, just a gut feeling and sometimes you gotta roll with it.
South Florida Bulls (-17) vs. Connecticut Huskies: At some point, the USF team we expected to contend for a possible New Year's Six will show up. The Huskies needed a second-half rally to get a win against Holy Cross. The Bulls have played down to their competition in the first two weeks, but this is a conference game and I fully expect them to show their dominance in the AAC with at least a 30-point victory.
San Diego State Aztecs (+3.5) at Arizona State Sun Devils: We can't call ourselves Underdog Dynasty without taking at least one underdog. This week, the Aztecs look to be another G5 school that isn't getting love from Vegas as they take on a P5 program. San Diego State is better on both sides of the ball, while ASU is 1-4 in their last five games against Mountain West opponents. Back the Aztecs as I expect them to win outright, and if not, a loss by a field goal still earns you money.
That's all I got for Week 2. SHOW ME THE MONEY!!
