Per Pete Thamel of Yahoo, Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia has decided to sit out the 2017 season. Moglia is dealing with a “bronchial asthmatic reaction to allergies” and states he will be back with the football program once this season is over. Moglia stressed that he will be fine and that this is more dealing with his health for the long-term.
Either way this is a huge blow to the Coastal program as they enter their first full season as full-time member of the Sun Belt Conference. Moglia has been in Conway for five seasons and has collected a 51-15 record that has included three double-digit win seasons and two appearances in the FCS Quarterfinals. Moglia is well known for being the former CEO at TD Ameritrade before taking an unpaid position on Bo Pelini’s staff at Nebraska in 2009. The former stock broker turned 68 this year.
Going forward, offensive coordinator Jamey Chadwell will call the shots. Chadwell was hired this past offseason as the OC and associate head coach, taking over for Dave Patenaude who is now the play-caller at Temple. Chadwell was the head coach at FCS Charleston Southern the last four seasons where he compiled a 35-14 record with two double-digit win seasons. Chadwell was a two-time FCS National Coach of the Year while in Charleston where they were Big South rivals to Coastal.
It should be an interesting first season for the Chanticleers in the Sun Belt. Coastal opens up against UMass in the newly expanded Brooks Stadium on September 2nd.
