Appalachian State was unable to land a player within the seven rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, but three former Mountaineers have found homes for now as undrafted free agents.
It came to a shock that not a single App state player was not drafted between rounds six and seven with names like Marcus Cox and Jon Law on the board who were leaders on each side of the ball.
The following are each of the undrafted free agents from App State for 2017.
Safety Alex Gray- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Alex Gray started 39 games throughout his tenure at Appalachian State. He was a leader in a App secondary that was ranked sixth nationally in interceptions with 20. Gray finished his career with over 200 tackles and had 46 as a senior this past year. It will be interesting to see if Alex can catch on with Tampa Bay as safety has been one of their weaker spots over the past few seasons.
Offensive Lineman Parker Collins- Jacksonville Jaguars
Parker Collins was the core leader of the Appalachian State offensive line over the past couple of seasons. Collins started the final 32 games of his career in Boone as he helped block for two of the top running backs in the Sun Belt in Marcus Cox and Jalin Moore. He also finished up with just over 60 pancake blocks and 30 knockdowns on the front line. I believe Parker can catch on with with the Jags because they need more help up front to protect Blake Bortles and also pave the way for Leonard Fournette.
Linebacker Kennan Gilchrist- Dallas Cowboys
Kennan Gilchrist was a second team all-conference selection in 2016 on the hard nose App State defense. He started 39 games for his career in the black and gold with 253 career stops and 11 tackles for lost as a senior. Kennan also put together some impressive games over the 2016 season earning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors. Gilchrist will be a interesting guy to watch in Dallas as this Cowboys team lost a lot of defensive guys in free agency but also addressed this side of the ball heavily in the draft.
Notable Mountaineers Still Available-
Marcus Cox RB
John Law LB
Mondo Williams DB
Barrett Burns TE
The three guys who were signed at the completion of the draft are set to start rookie camp for their respective teams next week.
