Initially reported via the Denton Record-Chronicle, it looks like UNT’s QB battle isn’t going to be much of a battle.
With the loss of Alec Morris to graduation last year, sophomore Mason Fine has been the starter through all of the spring drills. Other QBs on the roster, Cade Pearson and Devlin Isadore, have not been seen in the rotation at scrimmages, so by process of elimination that sets redshirt senior Quinn Shanbour as the clear backup.
This will give Shanbour a chance to hang back during the opening weeks of the season and see what Fine has learned from his season’s worth of experience against C-USA competition. It could be argued that Fine did the same last year, as Morris was the starter in week one against a blowout loss to SMU, giving Fine a clear picture of what not to do. Though Morris did improve later in the season, Shanbour will be a solid, experienced backup as Pearson and Isadore wait and see how the team develops.
Additionally, The DRC further reported that the HB/TE position looks to play a large role in the UNT scheme this year, as head coach Seth Littrell has said he plans to use TE Kelvin Smith and Caleb Chumley in a variety of ways.
Former UNT players Jareid Combs and Chad Davis were seen at practice this week for UNT’s upcoming pro day, on March 29th.
The Mean Green play their spring game just four weeks from now, on April 8th, before opening their season against the Southland Conference’s own Lamar Cardinals on Sept 2.
