After leading FAU to a school record 10 wins in his first season as head coach, Lane Kiffin has agreed to sign a 10-year contract extension.
Chad Morris was the highest paid G5 coach this past year as he earned just above $2 million a year before leaving to become Arkansas’ new head coach. While the exact amount of the contract has yet to be announced, I expect this new deal will make Kiffin the highest paid head coach in the Group of Five.
It’s only been a year since Lane Kiffin arrived in Boca Raton and the transformation of not only the football program, but the FAU community itself since Kiffin’s arrival has been tremendous.
FAU’s profile has risen so much that out of state applications at FAU are up 35 percent. When FAU President John Kelly first arrived byway of Clemson, he made it known that he intended to make FAU a football school and if his hire of Lane Kiffin last year didn’t make that intention clear, this deal certainly confirms his commitment to the football program.
After bringing in the best recruiting class in Conference USA last year, Lane Kiffin parlayed that off the field success to one the best season in school history as the Owls won their first Conference USA Championship. I’ve always considered FAU to be a sleeping giant in the G5 and it seems that potential is finally being realized.
While it remains to be seen whether or not Kiffin coaches through the majority of this new contract, it’s very clear that FAU intends on being a major player in the college football world.
