New to top 10: Houston, SMU, Troy

Week 9 saw some big upsets in the Group of Five, and those results are reflected in this weeks top 10. Colorado State and Fresno State both go from top 10 to not receiving a single vote after losing 45-28 to Air Force and 26-16 to UNLV, respectively. Marshall drops out after losing to FIU 41-30, although they managed to keep hold of a few votes. Finally, previous #1 USF drops into a tie for 4th after losing to Houston 28-24, allowing UCF— who had been sniffing the top spot— to finally take it unanimously. Meanwhile, Houston’s big win gets them back into the rankings. Troy slips back in, even if just barely, after handling their business against Georgia Southern. And finally, SMU makes their first appearance in the top 10 after they’ve been quietly putting together a nice season.

With two MWC teams falling out alongside the lone C-USA team, the American once again reigns supreme with more than half of the top 10 being from the AAC. The Mountain West keeps two teams in while the Sun Belt and MAC have one each. C-USA drops out after Marshall’s loss, although Marshall and Florida Atlantic are knocking on the door.

There are four college football games tonight, and three of them involve teams in our top 10. First, the #3 Toledo Rockets play host to Northern Illinois on ESPNU. Then, the #7 Navy Midshipmen travel to Temple in an AAC championship game rematch on ESPN. Finally, the #10 Troy Trojans host Idaho on ESPNU. Tomorrow, our #2 (CFP #23) Memphis Tigers travel to Tulsa. Also tomorrow, the Florida Atlantic Owls host the Marshall Thundering Herd in a game between two teams that aren’t ranked but are the first two out. The marquee Saturday game will feature the new #1 UCF Knights at the #9 SMU Mustangs.
