Texas State smashes Coastal Carolina 27-7

The Bobcat defense stifles the Chanticleers offense for their first Sun Belt victory.

Saturday night’s trek to Conway, South Carolina, proved to be a very fruitful for Texas State as the Bobcats notched their first Sun Belt victory of 2017.

Coastal’s offense failed to match the success they had against App State and only mustered a paltry season low 183 total yards. The Chantileers’ only score of the night came on a Anthony Chelsea fumble scoop and score on a botched field goal attempt by Texas State.

Bobcat quarterback Damian Williams threw for a career high 269 yards passing and two touchdowns. The Texas State running attack racked up 238 yards on the ground, pounding Coastal Carolina’s defense. Texas State’s ball control offense held the ball for over 36 minutes compared to Coastal’s 23 minutes.

The Chanticleers offense never got on track tallying only 34 yards on the ground against a season average of 181.5 per game rushing. Running back Osharmar Abercrombie was held to seven total yards of offense and as a team Coastal Carolina only averaged 1.7 yards a carry.

After the first quarter and a half featured competitive play, the Bobcats took over, smothering the Coastal offense, only allowing 9 first downs all game. The Chanticleers did no favors to themselves either getting flagged 14 times for 123 yards.

This victory marks Bobcat head coach Everett Withers’ first conference win since taking over the program in 2016 and the first Sun Belt win for Texas State in two years.

Next up for Texas State is a homecoming showdown against the visting Aggies of New Mexico State. Coastal Carolina will have their hands full when they visit the Arkansas Razorbacks of the SEC.
