Appalachian State survived a valiant effort from a very game Coastal Carolina squad and won 37-29. The big news out of this game is nothing surprising as special teams continues to to be an issue, particularly Michael Rubino.

Coastal Carolina came to play and did not lay down when the Mountaineers jumped out to a early 14-0 lead. Taylor Lamb racked up 427 yards passing and two touchdowns. Lamb also became Appalachian State’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns, passing the great Armanti Edwards.

Coastal Carolina had great quarterback play too as Tyler Keane seemed to put a firm hold on the starting spot with a 17/29 332-yard performance. Keane also tossed two scores through the air one of which being a 73-yard hook up with the speedy Ky’Jon Tyler. Tyler had a field day catching the ball as he notched 141 yards on just five catches. CCU ran off a 16-point 2nd quarter to lead Appalachian State 19-17 at the half.

Michael Rubino once again gained a chorus of boos through Kidd Brewer Stadium as he costed Appalachian State six first half points, and then another miss in the second half for nine total missed points. Freshman backup kicker Chandler Staton came in to attempt the last extra point after a Marcus Williams score late in the fourth. Staton got a stadium full of cheers obviously after he stepped on the field.

Jalin Moore went down in the first half with an injury which led to Marcus Williams carrying the load for the App State running game as Upshaw was also out with an injury and didn't suit up. Wiliams finished with 72 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Turnovers once again was a difference maker in this game for Coastal as they coughed up the ball twice in the second half, while the Mountaineers committed zero.

Appalachian State now prepares to go out of Sun Belt play next week as they travel to take on the UMass Minutemen in what could be a scary trap game for App State. UMass just got their first win of the season as they defeated Georgia Southern.

Coastal Carolina will return back to Brooks Stadium as they welcome the Texas State Bobcats to the beach.
