Dropped out: Houston

New to top 10: Boise State

Boise State 31, San Diego State 14

That score alone caused some changes to the top 10 this week. First, it knocked SDSU out of the top spot, allowing USF to reclaim it. The Bulls and Aztecs remain the only two programs to hold the #1 ranking so far this season, although UCF is hot on USF’s tail, only two points behind them this week. Secondly, it allowed the Broncos to return to the top 10 after previously dropping out.

Houston’s stunning defeat to Tulsa knocked them out for the first time this season, giving Boise a path back into the rankings. Otherwise, nothing changed from last week other than some shuffling in the order.

Again, the top teams seem pretty straightforward to the voters. Marshall entered last week despite only four votes. They got a little more respect this week, but now it’s Troy’s turn to benefit, as they hang on to their spot in the rankings despite only meriting five points after their upset loss to South Alabama last week. They’ll need to bounce back as there are a few rising teams looking to take their spot.

Once again, every conference is represented. C-USA, the Sun Belt, and the MAC each have one. Boise replacing Houston allows the American and the Mountain West to be a little more balanced.

Tonight, the #3 (AP #25) Memphis Tigers get us started with a big AAC showdown against the Houston Cougars on ESPN. Tomorrow, the #9 Marshall Thundering Herd travel to Middle Tennessee, then the #7 Colorado State Rams take on New Mexico. The marquee game on Saturday has the #2 (#20 AP) UCF Knights taking on the #6 Navy Midshipmen.
