Anyone surprised to see Houston topping this last must have been miles away from a TV on Saturday morning. The Houston Cougars downright dominated Oklahoma to open their season, walking away with a 33-23 win in NRG Stadium. It wasn't a case of the cute G5 underdog using trick plays and opportune turnover to topple the Privileged Five Goliath-- the Cougars were the better team on the football field beyond any reasonable argument.
South Florida saw a drop in the poll this week but through no fault of their own. Ranked second in the preseason poll, the Bulls fell to #6 this week after BYU knocked off Pac 12 foe Arizona while Boise State and Toledo put the smack down on Louisiana Lafayette and Arkansas State, respectively.
A few Underdogs made their first appearances in the G5 poll following some impressive performances against Power Five programs. Southern Miss utilized 34 unanswered points to knock off Kentucky on the road. In perhaps the most unexpected Power Five upset of the week, the South Alabama Jaguars knocked off Mississippi State of the SEC after the Bulldogs boinked a game-winning field goal off the upright. Lastly, Louisiana Tech nearly shocked Arkansas despite redshirt freshman J'Mar Smith making his first start on the road following Ryan Higgins one game suspension.
