The uproar over the ‘new’ Georgia Southern Eagles Gus mascot continues, and some fans are apparently now willing to put their money where their Twitter fingers are.
A GoFundMe account has been launched to bring back the old, beloved Gus:
On September 3, 2016 the Eagle Nation was stunned to discover that our beloved Gus was no more and had been replaced with a new and unfamiliar mascot. Please consider donating to our fund to help resurrect the real Gus! Thanks for your support.
Note: all funds raised will be donated in Gus Eagle's name to the Georgia Southern Foundation.
As I write this $140 has been raised out of a goal of $1,000. Word is the old mascot costume is still around, so they may not really need any money. But the spirit is there.
UPDATE: There is now also a Change.org petition, so you can both vote and donate for the cause.
If you’re just getting caught up, the GS mascot got a makeover for the opening game, and fans, um, did not like the refresh.
Elsewhere, the #BringBackGus movement continues unabated. There’s a touching YouTube tribute set to “You Should Be Here,” a song appropriately sung by Georgia Southern alum Cole Swindell.
And more memes. Lots of memes.
There’s still no word on the whereabouts of old Gus. We’ll keep you posted as the situation develops.
