Marshall looks to stay undefeated this week as it hosts former MAC rival Akron. They will be making their 7th trip to Huntington.
Marshall’s offense, who were able to easily dismantle the Morgan State defense last week, put up 550 yards of total offense in their shut out of Morgan State. Chase Litton, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 313 yards and zero picks, leads the team back on the field at Joan C. Edwards. Litton hit five different receivers for six touchdowns. Emanuel Byrd leads the team in receptions with three averaging over 19 yards per carry. Michael Clark’s two catches were both for touchdowns.
The defense, who were the topic of a lot of preseason discussion, only gave up 220 yards last week. They forced four fumbles, one of which was returned 95 yards for a touchdown by George Davis.
Akron will be Marshall’s first FBS opponent this year. They should offer up more of a challenge to the Herd. However, the Zips only put up 224 yards of offense last week against the Badgers. Their lone touchdown was on a punt return by JoJo Nelson.
This game is the second of three home games Marshall has to start the season. It will serve as a final warm up for the Herd as they gear up for their matchup against 10th ranked Louisville.
This will be the 13th matchup between the two former conference rivals. The Herd leads the series 9-4.
