My last post on GSU recruiting was supposed to be the final one before national signing day arrives on Wednesday. That idea went out the window with yesterday's announcement the Eagles got a commitment from one of the top kicking prospects in the nation:
Tyler Bass (@BassTylerBass) February 1, 2015
Bass has quite the resume. He was an all-state selection out of South Carolina's Dutch Fork High School (also the home of Georgia Southern commit Lane Ecton) and won the 2014 Chris Sailer award, which according to its website is presented to the national high school placekicker of the year.
As always, here is a highlight reel with some of his work:
Normally, the recruitment of a kicker might not be huge news. However, Georgia Southern has struggled with field goals over the last few seasons. The epic 2013 win over Florida was a lot more exciting than it needed to be thanks to two missed PATs. Similarly, last season's nailbiter victory over ULM was marred by two more missed extra points.
No disrespect at all to the team's current kickers, but with so many games decided by missed or made kicks this is a big pickup.
On a sadder note, Southern also lost a recruit as Alex Davis has flipped to Nebraska. Best of luck to him there.
The recruiting calendar enters a dead period from Monday through signing day so this should be the last bit of news until the circus comes to town mid-week. Check back here for all the news/analysis/unending Georgia Southern love on Feb. 4.
