Three Things We Learned From Week 13 Conference USA Football

Joshua Lindsey-USA TODAY Sports

Western Kentucky, one of the best teams in C-USA history

In what was supposed to be the game of the year in Conference USA Western Kentucky made sure not to give their fans a heart attack of a game like last year's thrilling 67-66 overtime victory over 24th ranked Marshall.

This year the matchup was never in doubt as Western Kentucky officially supplanted Marshall as kings of the C-USA East division with an easy 49-28 victory on senior day.

With the the win the Hilltoppers join elite company in becoming the seventh team in Conference USA history to finish undefeated in conference play in the regular season. They also are now the second team to do so since the installment of the Conference USA Championship game in 2005.

To say WKU won't go down as one of the best teams in C-USA history would be a joke.

The Hilltoppers average margin of victory during conference play this season was 27 points. They scored at least 30 points in each contest as Brandon Doughty's name is now all over the record books.

With a ton of records broken and milestones achieved by WKU this season you would think they've done just about everything but there's still history to be made.

WKU will host their first ever conference championship game against Southern Miss next week. If the Toppers win it will be their first C-USA Championship in school history.

Southern Miss, the best in the west

Southern Miss did what they did all season against Louisiana Tech. They played aggressive, they played loose, and they scored, and scored, and scored, and well you get my point.

The Eagles went to Ruston, Louisiana, and opened a can on the Bulldogs for a 58-24 victory to claim the C-USA West division.

Southern Miss' only blemish during conference play was a 31-10 loss to Marshall on the road. Since the loss they have outscored opponents by a whopping total of 255-98.

Against La Tech Todd Monken was aggressive all day with his decision making as he tried a surprise onside kick up 14-3 that was successfully recovered by the Eagles and went for a touchdown at the goal line with two seconds left before the half up 24-10 which proved to be unsuccessful.

The defense harassed Jeff Driskel all day forcing him to throw three interceptions. Southern Miss turned a vaunted Tech defense to swiss cheese as Ito Smith rushed for a season-high 169 yards and three touchdowns.

En route to capturing the west division title Southern Miss won every intra-division contest by at least 20 points.

Conference USA will have five bowl teams

Old Dominion nearly pulled off a comeback to beat Florida Atlantic in the quest for six but was unable to do so falling 33-31. With the loss C-USA will have five bowl eligible teams for seven slots.

Because there is a guarantee that a few 5-7 teams will be selected for bowl games a lot of you Rice, UTEP, ODU and FIU fans may think there's still room for hope.

Well stop.

Apparently, only the teams with the highest APR scores will be eligible and guess what, you're team ain't on that list.

This is a good thing. I've seen Rice, UTEP, ODU and FIU all play. They aren't bowl worthy in the slightest.

The teams that will represent Conference USA this postseason are legitimately good teams.

Last bowl season C-USA went 4-1. This season WKU, MTSU, Southern Miss, Marshall, and Louisiana Tech will try to do the conference one better and go undefeated this bowl season.

If either FIU, ODU, UTEP, or Rice got in I doubt that feat would even be possible.
