Larry Coker made it no secret that he wished to remain at UTSA despite his contract ending at the conclusion of the 2015 season. And after months of negotiation, the he and UTSA came to an agreement this week and submitted the contract to the UT System Board of Regents for approval. Coker's deal now runs through 2019.
Coker won't see a huge raise with his new contract, as his guaranteed pay will increase by just 15 percent, but his earning ability will increase thanks to performance-based bonuses that could constitute a possible 150 percent increase from his previous deal.
With his new deal, Coker's is guaranteed $2.25 million over its duration. For a former national champion, that's a bargain. When Coker's contract reaches its maximum payment year in 2019, that $500,000 likely won't be in the top 100 coaching salaries in college football.
A huge point of contention for Coker during contract negotiations was pay raises for his assistant coaches, who are among the lowest-paid in college football. While it's likely that these terms were met by the university, the Board of Regents' agenda notes makes no mention of increases in staff pay.
