UTSA defeated Southern Miss tonight thanks to Sean Ianno's four field goals, including a 38 yard game winning kick with two seconds remaining.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout with the first points not coming until 10:08 in the second quarter when Sean Ianno made his first field goal, a 41 yarder to give UTSA a 3-0 lead.. He hit another field goal near the end of the first half to extend the Roadrunner lead to 6-0.
UTSA got the ball to start the second half and drove down the field and got yet another field goal, this time a 35 yarder from Ianno. The teams exchanged punts for the remainder of the third quarter before Southern Miss finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with a 36 yard field goal to cut the UTSA lead to 9-3.
Southern Miss took their first lead of the game when Nick Mullens threw a 22 yard pass to Markese Triplett giving Southern Miss a 10-9 lead. The teams exchanged punts before UTSA got the ball back with 2:17 left. The Roadrunners drove to the Southern Miss 21 yard line then UTSA head coach Larry Coker called a timeout and gave his kicker a shot to win the game with a 38 yard field goal. Ianno made the kick and UTSA won 10-9.
Southern Miss is now 3-8 (1-6 in CUSA) while UTSA is now 3-7 (2-4 in CUSA). The Golden Eagles will have an off week before playing their final grame of 2014 against UAB at home. UTSA will travel to Western Kentucky next week for a CUSA showdown and will try to win their second consecutive game.
