I'm sure there will be plenty of people that disagree with me, but can Conference USA schools please stop scheduling FCS (and below) schools? We talk about credibility of the league ALL THE TIME, but it doesn't help when the following opponents dot C-USA member schedules:
- Bethune-Cookman (FIU)
- Wagner (FIU)
- Savannah State (MTSU)
- Alcorn State (Southern Miss)
- Nicholls State (UNT)
- Hampton (Old Dominion)
- Alabama A&M (UAB)
- Rhode Island (Marshall)
- Northwestern State (Louisiana Tech)
Sure, it might make for a nice headline: "FIU is 2-0 to start the year, with wins over Bethune-Cookman and Wagner", but does it do anything to help the general perception of the team?
Get these FCS (and in some cases Division II) teams off the schedule. Seriously. So you have to schedule a 3 for 1 with a P5 member in order to do this? That's ok, because that's how the little programs prove their mettle. I know Boise State and Hawaii played patsies, but it's getting harder and harder to climb up the rankings when you're playing teams that weren't even close to qualifying for the FCS playoffs.
I know North Texas fans would hate having only five home games. But in my opinion, the best barometer of a team's success is how they fare by playing teams that are better than them. Nothing is gained by scheduling these games, but a lot can be lost.
